DJ held the door open, and Clarissa slid in, settling into the smooth leather seat that felt like it was built to hold her. She sat still, breathing in the smell of the new vehicle while DJ loaded some things from his Infinity into the trunk of the Porsche. She had gone with Jon went he went to purchase the new car, but he hadn’t offered her a spot inside when he took it for a test run. Maybe he was teasing her, knowing that she’d have this opportunity to make her first time inside this car a shared experience with DJ.

DJ dropped into the driver’s seat. He fiddled with the mirrors and adjusted the seat way back to fit his long legs. Then the two of them sat silently for a moment, with him gazing at the gauges on the dashboard while she tried to figure out the sound system.

She stole a glance at DJ. His face lit up as he hit the ignition and the 911 came alive.

“Fuck, look at this baby’s stick shift! Seven damn gears!”

He looked at her and grinned. “Sorry if my language offends you, but this is one hell of a stroke of luck for this ole Georgia boy.”

“Hey, I get it. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s see what this monster can do!”

DJ laughed, although he seemed surprised. “Your wish is my command,” he said, and pointed his new beast toward the parking lot entrance.

“Wait!” Clarissa reached over and put her hand on his upper arm. It felt like solid steel under her fingertips.

DJ turned to her. “You’ve changed your mind already?”

It was Clarissa’s turn to laugh. “No, it’s just that I’m hot.” She withdrew her hand and fanned herself to make her point.

With a flick of a few switches and levers, DJ quickly rolled down the windows and retracted the roof, letting in the cool late evening South Florida winter air.

“Now?” he asked with a smile.

She nodded.

“All right! But I’m new here. So tell me where you’d like to go for a drive and dinner.”

Clarissa didn’t need to even think about it. “I know this fantastic seafood bar on the Gulf in Naples.”

“Sure. About how far is that?”

“Only a hundred ten miles straight across Alligator Alley, and no cops,” Clarissa said with a smirk. “I’ll punch it into the GPS, and then we can sit back and enjoy the ride.”

He nodded enthusiastically and put the 911 in gear. “Be there in an hour. In the mood for stone crabs?”

It was dark when the Porsche went through the only toll station and began its adventure west. It was getting cool, and she asked DJ to roll up the windows. The breeze from the open roof was blowing Clarissa’s thick blonde hair around her face, but she didn’t mind.

Clarissa glanced at DJ and saw he had his eyes fixed on the road. His lips curved in a small smile while he stared ahead at the white road of the Alley. The lines in the road looked like dots to Clarissa as the speedometer crept up to one hundred and held steady.
